So there is no doubt. Having kids is one of the awesome things about marriage. Don’t get me wrong, kids are a lot of trouble. And I am sincerely convinced toddlers look so cute so we won’t kill them! But when you are married, and you get to watch your husband hold this little life that the two of you made (or adopted), it is PURE JOY.
Our First Baby
For us, we have been together 10 years by the time a kiddo joined the party. In fact, our first born daughter was born on the anniversary of our first date! (When you have a kid on Memorial Day weekend, no one is around to visit you and you have time to look at the calendar from 1994). And oh to see Scott holding our baby!! I still remember Scott seeing her first and saying “she’s amazing…she’s amazing” with tears streaming down his face. (Please don’t take his man card- this was a really sweet time to cry).
Different Parenting Styles
Over the years, it has been both our unity in parenting and our incredibly DIFFERENT style of parenting that have made it all work. As much as I think he should do it like me (because I am right), I know our kids are better off for having 2 very different people guiding them. It is in the safety of marriage that our children can relax and feel secure and grow and thrive.
Team Work
When we were pregnant with our second kiddo, Scott had the idea of getting Team Doust shirts made for the hospital. It may sound geeky, but it was super awesome too. OK- to be honest, I laughed at first. But then when I realized he was serious, I surprised him and had them made. And it represents something big- that we are a team. We work together growing this family.
Marriage Foundations
Now our kids are 12, 10, 8 and 6 and we are still Team Doust, without the shirts. And our marriage is the beginning of this family and the continued foundation of it. It’s not easy…I would never choose the word easy…but it is incredibly rewarding.
